Gov't approves new police unit for Arab community

The government approved a request by Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich to set up a new police unit that will serve the Arab community, and passed a NIS 34 million budget for that purpose on Sunday.
The increased budget will also go toward increasing community policing.
"This is an important and necessary step, which will contribute to personal security, and will improve services to a community that is seeking and that is in need of police services," Aharonovich said following the decision.
Arab community leaders have long called for an increase in police presence in their areas, and for a crack down on violent criminal organizations and illegal firearms.
