Government asking for boost in desalination production

The Inter-Ministerial Tender Committee for Seawater Desalination sent requests on Sunday to the operators of Israel's three desalination plants – in Ashkelon, Palmachim and Hadera – that the companies submit proposals by August 8 to expand their plants and increase Israel's production of desalinated water, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.
Ashdod currently has a capacity of 120 million cubic meters per year, Palmachim has 45 and Hadera has 127, according to the committee, which expects that all three plants will come up with successful proposals. If approved, the additional water would be supplied in two stages, with at least half coming by the end of 2012 and the rest by the end of 2013, the statement said.
