Erdan: Public Utilities Authority failed the public

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan said that the Public Utilities Authority has failed in protecting the public's interests, speaking with Israel Radio on Tuesday.
Erdan explained that the Authority didn't take into account the social and environmental consequences of raising electricity rates. The minister also criticized industry leaders for warning that electricity price increases would be passed on to the consumer, saying that in times that electric rates fell, those savings were not felt by consumers in the prices of manufactured products.
The government, the environmental protection minister said, is making efforts to reduce the price of electricity paid by Israelis by lowering excise taxes on diesel as well as permitting one power station to burn more polluting but cheaper fuels.
Electricity rates jumped by 12 percent on Monday after a previously announced 20% hike was slashed.
