Egypt police fire warning shots after clashes

CAIRO - Military police fired warningshots in the air at a protest outside the Egyptian DefenseMinistry in Cairo on Saturday after stone-throwing clashes brokeout between thousands of demonstrators and opponents, witnessessaid.

They said several people were injured, including at leastthree children, apparently by stone-throwing as demonstratorsand what appeared to be thugs traded stones broken from streetpavements.

A Reuters witness said at least 15 rounds of gunfire,apparently blanks, were heard, sending people screaming.

The demonstrators had marched peacefully to the headquartersof the ruling military council at the Defense Ministry to pressfor political reforms and for a quick trial of policemen who hadkilled demonstrators in the Jan. 25 uprising that forcedPresident Hosni Mubarak to step down.
