Chief Rabbi of Paris, David Mashash dies at 77

The Chief Rabbi of Paris, Rabbi David Mashash, passed awayon Sunday at the age of 77. He had served the Parisian Jewish community for 16years as the city’s senior Orthodox leader. Chief Sephardi Rabbi Shlomo Amar,currently in Paris, was expected to give the main eulogy for Mashash, who willbe flown out to Israel and buried on Har Menuchot on Monday morning.

Mashash was born in the city of Meknes, Morocco, in 1934,the son of Shalom Mashash, former Chief Rabbi of Morocco and later Chief Rabbiof Jerusalem. President of the Representative Council of French JewishInstitutions Richard Prasquier described Messas as the spiritual soul andbackbone of the Jewish community in Paris and French Prime Minister FrancoisFillon praised Mashash’s work as a spiritual leader who had helped “build aJewish future in Paris and beyond.”
