Barak tells Ban Israel won't cooperate in UN Gaza probe

During a visit to New York Monday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and told him that Israel would not cooperate with the UN probe into allegations of war crimes during Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip. The investigative team, headed by international prosecutor Richard Goldstone, entered Gaza via Egypt on Monday, without having secured Israeli cooperation. Israel has said it believes the investigation will not be objective. "We don't approve of the mandate the committee was given to investigate war crimes," Barak told Ban. He added, however, that Goldstone "is valued by the world, and by us as well."
