IDF takes over Palestinian side of Rafah crossing

The IDF said that since 7:00 a.m., the crossing has been under its full operational control.

The IDF took over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on Tuesday morning, the military said.

The IDF added that since 7:00 a.m., troops from the 401st Brigade had attained full operational control of the crossing.

IDF troops led by the 162nd Division and guided by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and the Intelligence unit began on Sunday targeted operation against Hamas in East Rafah, the military said, following intelligence information that terrorists were using the area for terror purposes.

The IDF also stated it had cut off the Rafah crossing from the Salah al-Din Road, with military sources adding that the Givati Brigade controlled the Salah al-Din Road and was scanning the area.

The rockets which had been fired on Sunday towards the Kerem Shalom crossing and which killed four IDF soldiers  and wounded others had been fired from the area.

During the operation, Israel Air Force jets and troops of the 215th Fire Brigade struck and destroyed Hamas terror targets, among which were military buildings, underground infrastructures and other terrorist infrastructures from which Hamas operated in the Rafah area.

During the overnight operation, 20 terrorists were killed in action, according to the IDF's estimates, and many others were wounded.

The forces have so far located three operational shafts in the area and a car bomb that drove towards a tank was destroyed, the military added. 

The army also stated no casualties were reported among the forces. 

According to southern Command officials, 50 Hamas targets were attacked in the operation.

Sky News in Arabic reported on Tuesday that the Israeli flag had been raised at the crossing early Tuesday morning. 

The spokesperson of the Gaza border authority told Reuters that the crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt had been closed on the Palestinian side.

Military conducts precise strikes in Eastern Rafah

On Monday night, the IDF Spokesperson said on Monday night that the military had conducted precise, targeted strikes against Hamas terror targets in Eastern Rafah

The Prime Minister's Office said earlier on Monday night that the War Cabinet had agreed to continue with Israel's planned Rafah operation.
