A Syrian man was injured by IDF gunfire early Monday morning after he approached the border and attempted to throw anti-personnel mines toward the Golan Heights.

The IDF identified four suspects approaching the border fence and throwing objects toward it. An initial investigation found that the suspects threw mines at the perimeter road that is inside Israeli territory.

According to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, troops from the 402nd Artillery Battalion rushed to the scene, and after calling on the suspects to stop, opened fire at the legs of the Syrians.
One of the men was injured and evacuated by helicopter to Baruch Padeh Medical Center, Poriya, near Tiberias for further medical treatment.

According to reports, the man was in serious and unstable condition after being shot. The IDF said it was investigating.

Though the border on the Golan Heights with Syria has been relatively quiet, Hezbollah forces have been recruiting locals to join the group to carry out attacks against Israel.

An Israeli tank opened fire toward several suspects who had approached the border near the Syrian town of Hameidiyyeh last month. Two people were reportedly injured.

Last year the IDF revealed the identity of a Syrian Army officer in charge of observing Israel on the Syrian Golan Heights on Israel’s border, helping Hezbollah’s activities in the buffer zone between the two countries.

Identified as Naqib Bashar al-Hussein, a resident of the village of Ekrima in his 30s, the officer serves as a company commander in the intelligence branch of the Syrian Army’s 90th Brigade, but de facto serves as the “main link” between Hezbollah’s Southern Command and the Syrian Army’s 1st Corps.

The Southern Command, led by Munir Ali Na’im Shaiti, is the Hezbollah unit in charge of southern Syria whose main function is to create a Hezbollah infrastructure there and not only gather intelligence on the IDF, but train the Syrian Arab Army 1st Corps for war with Israel.

The Golan Project

The Golan Project, under the command of Ali Mussa Daqduq, has its headquarters in Damascus and Beirut. It is believed that there are more than a dozen cells belonging to the Golan Project on the Syrian Golan Heights.

Cells belonging to the Golan Project and Southern Command have already carried out attacks against the IDF. Israel, which has stated that it will not allow Hezbollah to entrench itself on the Golan Heights, has carried out several strikes against operatives belonging to the two, according to foreign reports.

In 2020 the IDF found improvised explosive devices (IEDs) within Israeli territory near the border with Syria in the southern Golan Heights.

Three months earlier, troops from the elite Maglan Reconnaissance Unit foiled an attempt to place explosive devices along the fence. The four members of a cell who were trying to plant the explosives were killed by IDF forces on the ground and by drones.

Following an investigation of the scene, weapons and a bag containing a number of explosive devices were found 25 meters from the perimeter fence inside Israeli territory.
