Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita will visit Israel in September for the second anniversary of the Abraham Accords.
The minister accepted an invitation to the anniversary event from Regional Cooperation Minister Esawi Frej when they met in Rabat on Thursday.
Additional senior officials from the region are expected to attend.
“Israel and Morocco have many shared characteristics that we should use to help strengthen the ties between the countries and their citizens,” Frej said. “That was the goal of my visit, during which I felt that there is good will in Morocco to strengthen the relations, the conversation and cooperation between the countries, which I will act to continue and promote.”
Morocco's role in the Middle East
The ministers discussed bilateral cooperation and Morocco’s role in promoting a peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, according to Frej’s spokesman.
Earlier this week, Frej met with Moroccan Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation Abdullatif Mirawi to discuss student exchange programs, including the possibility for Israelis to study medicine in Morocco, and joint scientific research.
Gideon Sa'ar's visit to Rabat
Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar also visited Rabat this week, where he met with Bourita and the head of Morocco’s secret services, Abdullatif Hamushi.
Sa’ar thanked Bourita for supporting Israel joining the African Union as an observer, and they discussed the progress toward Morocco opening a full embassy in Israel.
In addition, Sa’ar met with Moroccan Justice Minister Abdullatif Wahabi, and they signed a legal cooperation agreement, by which Israel will work with Morocco on digitizing its judiciary, advancing its public defender’s office, cooperation between Sharia courts and more.
The Israeli justice minister also met with the head of Morocco’s soccer federation, and the sides agreed to hold an exhibition game between the countries’ youth teams.
