21 dead, 270,000 homeless in Sri Lankan floods

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka  — Three more people have been killed in Sri Lanka by widespread floods and mudslides, bringing the death toll from days of heavy rain to 21, the government said Thursday.
The Disaster Management Center said more than a million people have been affected by the rains, with 270,000 becoming homeless.
Many villages in Eastern Province have been inundated, with some cut off from supplies.
Nine villages in the Muttur area of eastern Trincomalee district are isolated with only sea access, said N. Selvanayagam, a local government official.
Tens of thousands of people are in need of food and medical supplies and stocks are quickly running out, said Mohammad Jihad, a community leader in Muttur.
