This year's Performing Arts Center Jazz series gets underway tomorrow with a tribute to iconic trumpeter-vocalist Chet Baker, entitled Flute and Voice for Chet. The concert will be fronted by flutist Nicola Stilo, who performed and recorded with Baker extensively during the last decade of Baker's life, in the 1980s.
53-year-old Italian-born Stilo works in various genres, ranging from jazz to classical music, South American music and pop, and is also a skilled guitarist and pianist. The first part of tomorrow's concert will feature material that Stilo performed with Baker, who spent much of his career in Europe and worked with many jazz artists from Italy. For the second part of the show Stilo will be joined by compatriot vocalist Michela Lombardi.
Stilo's all-Italian band for the evening includes pianist Tony Pancella, who has performed here on several occasions, alongside bassist Giorgio Rosciglione and drummer Massimo Manzi.
This year's Performing Arts Center Jazz series is called Giant Steps, with the five concerts between now and next May dedicated to six of the genre's legendary figures, including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Art Blakey and Charlie Parker.
