One of Israel's best-recognized artists is back for three small gigs.

One of Israel's favorite daughters, Keren Ann, is back in town for three intimate concerts - one in Haifa and two in Tel Aviv. The 33 year-old singer/songwriter/producer was last here for a series of shows (including a major performance at Tel Aviv's Mann Auditorium) in May of last year, following the release of her most recent album, Keren Ann.
Her debut album La biographie de Luka Philipsen was released in 2000. Three years later she released Not Going Anywhere featuring the hit single of the same name, which was featured on the television show Grey's Anatomy. Her music has also appeared on the series Six Feet Under. Her style is highly recognizable, with a lyrically flowing quality accentuated by sweet vocals. Her musical influences include Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen (who needs to come to Israel already), Chet Baker and Billie Holiday. The sound of Ann's sad, despairing interpretation of the ennui of love runs a line between chick-chic Mazzy Star and the Velvet Underground.
Born in Caesarea to a Russian father and Dutch-Javanese mother, Keren Ann was raised in Paris and eventually moved to New York. Now she splits her time between both places. She produces her music in both adopted languages, of which she says: "[French] permits you to be more dramatic and old, but sometimes I get fed up with it and go back to English, where it has to be just as it is - straight, raw; you can't disguise things as much."
Keren Ann begins her trio of shows at Haifa's Beat Bar (Hanasi Boulevard 124, [04] 810-7107) on Thursday March 13. Doors are set to open at 8:30 p.m. and the show begins at 10 p.m. The following two nights, she will appear at the Tel Aviv Barby (Rehov Kibbutz Galuyot 52, [03] 518-8123), where both shows are scheduled for 10 p.m., and tickets are priced at NIS 129. The Barby shows are already standing room only.
