Thirty-four competitors will take part in the second Pnina Salzman Piano Competition that will take place at Kfar Saba's municipal auditorium from January 20-26.
There will be only one round for the youngest group of up-to-14-year-olds. Each contestant will play for 15-20 minutes, hoping for the first prize, worth NIS 5,000. But the 15-19-year-olds have more rounds; those that get through the first 15-20 minutes will also have to play a 20-30-minute recital. Five finalists will make it to a gala that includes playing a piano concerto with the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon Lezion. First prize for the older group is NIS 10,000. All competitors will play on a specially imported Fazioli concert-grand piano.
Pnina Salzman (1922-2006) was a child prodigy whose glittering international career lasted into the 1990s when she was the first Israeli pianist to play in China. She was also head of the piano department at Tel Aviv University, loved to play in chamber ensembles and was a respected judge at competitions. - Helen Kaye
New chapter for Story Gardens
Four new gardens are being inducted into Holon's Story Gardens on Friday. Large sculptures are planted throughout the park, each inspired by a different popular children's story. The aim is to encourage love for the arts among youth by combining literature and sculpture.
The new statues will depict David Grossman's Itamar Walks on Walls, Dvora Omer's The Bugged Cockroach, Paul Kor'sThe Fish Who Didn't Want to be a Fish and Dafna Halaf Gabai's Two Cats on One Bench. Thirteen other stories are also represented.
The park is located on Rehov Rafael Eitan and admission is always free. - Shira Teger
HOT primes for the Oscars
HOT Prime will broadcast the most acclaimed movies from film festivals worldwide beginning this month. For many of the films, this will be their first screening in Israel.
To prep for February, i.e. Oscar month, January will be devoted to the most important of the film festivals: the Berlin Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. Among the movies in the impressive lineup are SherryBaby, the story of a woman trying to reestablish her relationship with her daughter after spending three years in jail, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal; Puccini for Beginners, about a surprising love triangle; and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, wherein an oceanographer tries to exact revenge on a mythical shark. - Jerusalem Post staff
