The traveling exhibition of drawings based on a short story Gilad Schalit wrote when he was 11 will go on display in Holon's Steinberg Center for the Arts beginning December 16. Holon is the sixth city to host the exhibition, following showings in Ashdod, Tel Aviv, Petah Tikva and the North; it will remain there for a month and a half.
The story "When the Shark and the Fish First Met" was unearthed from a box in Schalit's old teacher's storeroom about 10 months after the soldier was abducted. It is a story reminiscent of the prophecy of Isaiah in which the wolf and sheep lie down together. The poignancy of the 11-year-old's hopeful writing is felt when considered in light of his fate less than a decade later.
Alongside professional artists' drawings of Schalit's story are the illustrations it inspired in children from around the country and the world. Also on display will be the letters written by children to Gilad Schalit, which will be sent to foreign embassies in Israel and to the president's office to encourage the efforts to secure his return.
