The Antonio Gades Company will present its full-length Carmen in Herzliya, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem from March 25-28, and March 30 to April 1. Stella Arauzo dances the title role with Adrian Galia as Don Jose.
Antonio Gades (1936-2004) is regarded by many as the principal interpreter of flamenco in the 20th century. Some months before he died, he entrusted the legacy of his dances to a select cadre of dancers. To the last hand clap, they have recreated his five greatest works, among them Blood Wedding after Lorca, Fuente Ovejuna, based on the play by Lope de Vega and Carmen, which premiered first as a film in 1983. Smoldering, sexy and handsome, Gades himself danced Don Jose. Carmen was Christina Hoyos. Arauzo, currently artistic director of the company, took over from Hoyos in 1988 and has danced the role ever since. Galia, a principal dancer in Hoyos's own company, joined AGC in 2004.
