'If Katsav indicted, I won't recommend he resign'

"If the president is indicted, and we receive proof that would refute the charges against him, I will recommend that he not resign," President Moshe Katsav's attorney, Zion Amir, said Monday morning. In an interview with Army Radio, Amir said that "if dramatic evidence appears that will alter the balance [of the case], today or tomorrow or in another week or in another month, I believe we cannot expect the president to vacate his position...." Amir, who has said previously that the president would step down if charged, did not say whether the defense was in possession of any such evidence. Katsav has been under investigation since the summer for the alleged sexual harassment and rape of several women who worked in his office.
