Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is probably not mentally fit to stand trial, the head of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, attorney Eliad Shraga, said on Saturday.
“The truth that nobody wants to say must be spoken,” Shraga said at a cultural event in Beersheba. “That woman is probably not mentally fit to stand trial.”
Shraga suggested that this is something many people think but do not say aloud, including in his view, Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit and Sara Netanyahu’s lawyer, Yossi Cohen. Both men, Shraga said, “hinted to this truth.”
On Thursday, Netanyahu was indicted for fraud with aggravated circumstances and breach of public trust in what has become known as the “Prepared Food Affair,” referring to fraudulently obtaining NIS 359,000 from the state in hundreds of prepared food orders.
That trial is expected to start after Sukkot in the fall.
Netanyahu is fending off the accusations against her in the indictment. One of her claims in her defense is that the cooks employed by the residence were inexperienced, and some were cleaners who also occasionally cooked, Channel 2 News reported Saturday evening. Among other stories, they unfolded a story of a cook who served lasagna with glass in the sauce.
According to Netanyahu’s attorney, the cook swept up sauce from the floor after its glass container broke and put it in the dish, and thus served it to the family. Sara Netanyahu discovered the shards of glass only a moment before she ate from the dish. As proof of this claim, Netanyahu’s associates provided a letter of apology that, they claim, that worker wrote. The same worker is described in the indictment as an experienced cook.
In the past, there have been extensive reports on demands Netanyahu allegedly made of former housemaids hired to clean the Prime Minister’s Residence.
