David Halbfinger comes to post after 20 years at newspaper

He will replace Ian Fisher, who took up the post in January.Halbfinger will move from being deputy national editor to “one of the scrutinized (and most prestigious) jobs in journalism,” according to Michael Slackman and Greg Winter, the editor and deputy editor, respectively, of the paper’s international desk.Writing on Twitter, Halbfinger called the new job “a dream fulfilled. Looking forward. Wish me luck!” Fisher, who replaced Peter Baker in the job, will be leaving the Times after 28 years, since “he was ready for a change,” according to the paper. Baker was in the position for just under a year, until he was recalled in January to helm the paper’s coverage of President Donald Trump’s time in office.Baker replaced Jodi Rudoren, who held the position for three years and eight months.Prior to becoming deputy national editor, Halbfinger served as the 2016 presidential campaign editor, a deputy metro editor, reporter and copyboy.
