Following the success of last year’s capsule collection, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Israeli fashion brand Castro have once again collaborated to create a unique collection of T-shirts for men and women designed to feature works from the Museum’s Israeli art collection.
“The classical T-shirt, which has gone through many different transformations in the 20th century and has acquired an iconic status in recent decades, becomes a ‘canvas’ for fashion designers, while paying homage to Israeli art,” said Tal Lanir, the project’s curator.
The limited edition collection incorporates the spirit of local fashion with significant works by leading Israeli artists – painters, photographers and sculptors – among them Menashe Kadishman, Zadok Ben-David, Micha Bar-Am, Rita Alima, David Adika, Ohad Matalon, Hagit Lalo and Benni Efrat.
The 2016 selection has expanded from solely T-shirts to include tunics, a tote bag and men’s swimwear. The new collection also utilizes a variety of techniques, like embroidery and bleaching, in an assortment of textiles.
Like last year, fashion and art come together with the Castro-sponsored evenings “Thursdays at T,” which offer free entry to the museum every Thursday in August from 9 p.m. to midnight. During these events the museum provides a variety of activities including exhibition tours, lectures, video art, music and workshops.
Unlike in the past, this year museum visitors can view the works that have been featured in the collection first hand, as the originals are on show in an exhibition entitled Inspiration, which is on show in the museum’s new building through August 30.
“The connection between fashion and art moves us” said Gabi Rotter, co-CEO of Castro.
“As Israel’s leading fashion house we are proud to once again partner with the Tel Aviv Museum of Art – a place that, to us, represents the pinnacle of Israeli creation. Opening the museum’s doors on Thursday evenings allows us to celebrate the museum’s treasures and expose them in a new way, increasing access to the arts and to the museum’s collection of works created by the top Israeli artists.”
