Many Tel Aviv tattoo and piercing parlors lack sanitary standards

Before piercing or inking your flesh, be aware that many Tel Avivian parlors fail to reach proper sanitary levels, says Health Ministry.

A large majority of tattoo and piercing parlors in Tel Aviv do not have business licenses, and most lack the sanitary and other conditions needed to manage such businesses.

This, according to a report issued by the Health Ministry’s environmental health department on Sunday.

It took action after being informed about two cases in which customers were infected with viruses after making use of services in tattoo and piercing parlors.

There are at least 50 such establishments in the Tel Aviv area.

At 19 of the parlors that were visited, inspectors found many had a low level of awareness regarding sanitary rules and a lack of strict adherence to proper sanitary conditions.

Those in violation have been given a period of 20 to 30 days to correct defects before legal action is taken against them.

The department inspects businesses that could pose a risk to health on a monthly basis.

It is also known that tattooing businesses in the Tel Aviv district attract many customers, and some pose the risk of transmitting HIV, hepatitis B and C and other dangerous viruses.

The ministry said inspectors will continue to monitor the implementation of the requirements.

The Tel Aviv district health office is planning a training day for tattoo shop owners to increase awareness of strict hygiene and proper working procedures so as to protect the health of their customers.

It also asked for information about the chemical composition of tattoo dyes, suppliers and manufacturers.
